In with a bang, out with a whimper: Facebook-only... →
About a year ago, this small local site decided to move its operation exclusively to Facebook. It seemed a little gimmicky, yes, but it also promised new possibilities for social interaction with readers, extremely minimal operation costs, and it was a bold move that attracted nationwide coverage from media nerds like myself.
I thought I’d check in with the brave little news site, and lo...

Tyler Clementi’s Suicide and Dharun Ravi’s Trial →
On a Saturday night in August, 2010, a week before starting college, Dharun Ravi decided to look online for his future Rutgers roommate. He was living with his parents in Plainsboro. Ravi, who was planning to major in math and economics, had learned that he had been assigned to Davidson Hall—a collection of single-story, barracks-like dorms on Busch campus, which is considered the dullest of the...

Incredible: Maurice Sendak is just a wonderful, horrible man.
And here’s part 2.
I definitely want to try this.
Back in 1700 or thereabouts, if you wanted a hot drink, you asked your tavernkeeper to mix it up in a mug and then thrust a red-hot poker into it. The method lacked a bit of subtlety, though, and between that and the fact that modern bars rarely have blazing fires with iron pokers in them, that method of heating drinks has fallen out of fashion. Which is a shame,...
WSJ social media editor gets nerdy about news →
Now that I’m at work from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., I’m starting to think seriously about how I consume media. What’s important? What’s junk? How can I choose what’s important and what’s not? Who can I trust to do most of that filtering for me?
I haven’t figured it out yet. I’m guessing I’ll settle on a combination of Twitter Lists and a few trusted...

So I just got a job, which is great news, but I have even better news — I’m playing at Pete’s Candy Store in Williamsburg this Sunday night! It’s going to be a pull-out-all-the-stops no-holds-barred acoustic-solo-singer-songwriter event.
I think it should be a lot of fun. If you’re busy or you can’t go out at 10:30 p.m. on a Sunday night because we’re all...

Frank Bruni on the Paula Deen “situation.”
You show me a truly skinny food editor or writer who frequents serious restaurants and — in two out of three cases — I’ll show you someone expert at a brand of knife work that yields infinitesimal bites and an illusion of gluttony where mere grazing occurred. They should be surgeons, these people. I know. Especially during my five years...

NY Times — How Mrs. Grady Transformed Olly Neal →
I’m not usually into these tear-jerker stories, but I read this the other day and it made an impact. And I’m a cynical 20-something bored in the ’80s! So there’s probably something to it. The entire piece is worth reading, but here’s a particularly impressive passage.
“So I stole it.”
Neal tucked the book under his jacket and took it home — and loved it....

Looks like NPR discovered “grapples” — the curiously grape-flavored apple. Come on NPR, where’ve you been? Obviously not my local Upstate New York grocery store 4 years ago. (I’ve never had one but I wouldn’t mind a taste test.)

'Your business isn't what you think it is'
Steve Yelvington drew comparisons between Kodak and the journalism industry on his blog yesterday. His isn’t a new idea, but it’s an important one. And his not-so-subtle dig at Gannett stings (though I’d still like to remain optimistic about these kinds of decisions).
From “What newsrooms should learn from Kodak”:
Your business isn’t what you think it is....

NYPA Day 1 Roundup
The good news: I was by far the king of Twitter curation/reporting at NYPA 2011 today (granted, it’s easy climbing to the top of a fairly small pile). “Live-tweeting” (will I ever get used to that horrible word?) was a bit of a challenge but a fantastic alternative to note-taking; summarizing key points for an audience forced me to make better conclusions and focus on the most...

The Eagle, published Jan. 13, 2011. Ami Olson, editor.
The July 2010 relaunch of The Eagle (formerly City Eagle) featured a brand new design and a departure from our other papers. I was responsible for the paragraph styles paper-wide, redesigned columnist headboxes, section headers, folio lines and other design elements of the paper. I was also responsible for copy-editing the paper each week.

Originally published at Eagle News Online Nov. 1, 2010.
Empire Brewing Company owner David Katleski, of Cazenovia, spoke to the Cazenovia village board on Nov. 1 to discuss his plans to build a microbrewery right next to Lorenzo State Historic Site - which would eventually require annexation of the property by the village.

Cheap victories
When you’re in 11th grade, a cheap victory is still a victory By Doug Campbell
This piece originally appeared in the October 10 edition of the Cazenovia Republican.
When Kurt Wheeler told our class the incentive for getting a perfect score on the regents exam would be free dinner at the Brewster, we were all pretty excited.
But, being conniving high schoolers, one of us suggested a...
