Every day, it gets easier and then harder to find music. A lot of methods of listening are legally questionable, and the website you found last week that is a great source of new tunes might shut down next week.
As such, I’ve really taken to Lala.com. The general conceit of the site is that you can listen to any track, in full, once. It’s perfect for discovering new music, or discovering that one B-side you could never find.
The music can be had cheaply, too; Lala lets you buy tracks for on-site listening for about ten cents (the full MP3 is a dollar, and free of any DRM.)
Recently, several websites, including Pitchfork, have integrated with Lala. If I’m bored and sitting at home on a Saturday night, I can go to Pitchfork, see what the most read reviews are, and listen to three or four new albums.
As far as listening for free goes, Lala is perfect for comedy. Who needs to listen to a comedy album more than once? I just listened to Patton Oswalt’s new album, My Weakness is Strong. And I know I’m not going to listen again.
So maybe Lala isn’t perfect for comedians, or for artists who make crappy music, but I love it. P.S. There’s also a social component to it, but I don’t spend too much time with that. I have three friends. Anyway, check it out.
